Our History
Providence Road Baptist Church was started by Rev. Emmitt Beard on January 27, 1957, in a one room house just across the road from the present location of the church. Nineteen people attended that first Sunday. Present were the Lawrence Campbell family, the Shook family, and W. W. Hendrix, along with Rev. and Mrs. Emmitt Beard. The offering in this first service was $1.32. The church had no piano and was heated by an old wood stove. Providence Road Baptist Church was organized on July 7, 1957. The one room house was given for worship free of rent by W.W. Hendrix. Twenty-five people were baptized at the first baptism service held in Mr. Hendrix’s pond.
The first permanent structure was built in 1959 in memory of Rev. James T. Hendrix on land donated by W.W. Hendrix and Mollie Hendrix, widow of the late Rev. James T. Hendrix. Rev. Dean Silver became the pastor in January of 1967, with about twenty members at the time. As God blessed, the church began to grow and started supporting the church’s first missionary in 1968. The first missionary was Odis Seals in Yucatan, Mexico. He is still one of our missionaries today in 2008.
In July 1970, Rev. Silver became the church’s first full time pastor. In January 1971, the first addition was begun to the church building. It was completed in June 1973, with the first service held on June 10, 1973. On October 24, 1976, the church called Rev. Charles Worley to be our new Pastor. His first service was November 14, 1976. Pastor Worley continues as our Pastor in 2008. On June 6, 2008, Providence Rd. Baptist celebrated Pastor Worley’s 50 years preaching the Gospel.
As the church grew in membership, the present auditorium was built with the first service held on October 4, 1998. The Lord has blessed during the fifty year history of Providence Road Baptist Church with a great number of young men called into the Gospel ministry and thousands of souls saved.
God has blessed through the seven Pastors of Providence Road Baptist Church over these fifty years. The past and current pastors are -
